In this new day and age you cannot turn around without seeing someone texting and driving. Almost everyone is using a cell phone to communicate with each other and it is great in the world of technology. But there is certainly a time and place to use it. Driving is definitely a time where you do not want to be texting. A smart defensive driver will realize that they need to focus more on the road and less to the little blue screen that is on the passenger seat. Texting and driving is becoming the worst kind of driver distraction on the road and one of the biggest causes of traffic crashes and deaths.
Help Prevent Texting and Driving

Put your phone in a place where you won’t see it
This is probably the easiest thing one can do to be a tactful defensive driver. Put it in the glove compartment, or if you are a woman put it in your purse and close it. This will highly increase your chances of being safe on the road and arriving to your destination safely. Also, if you put it in a place where you cannot see it, you will soon start to think more of what is happening on the road rather than focusing on the text that Shelby has sent you.
Silence your Phone
This is another positive thing to do when you get into your vehicle. Completely silence it, do not put it on vibrate because you can still hear it, and if you are like me, hearing the phone vibrate makes you curious as to who is calling or texting you. The most important thing as a defensive driver is to keep your hands and eyes off of your phone while you are driving, and it is also important for the people around you.
Give the Passenger the Phone!
This is also a very good idea because the person in the passenger seat is not the one behind the wheel. Give them your phone and you tell them what you want them to text or look up, it really is that easy. They have the privilege to text while in motion, so take full advantage of that!
Being a responsible defensive driver is especially important for the safety of everyone, do not text and drive. If you are a parent that has a teenager that is starting to drive, make it an absolute rule that texting and driving is not allowed. Helping to stop them from texting and driving may potential save their life.
