Cell Phones

Most people would agree that the use of cell phones while driving is unsafe. The U.S. Department of Transportation estimates that there are nearly 600,000 crashes each year due to cell phone use while driving. This is why many states have written in legislation to ban cell phone use while operating a vehicle, to help cut down on cell phone related accidents.

Other Distractions

Just because cell phones are being focused on at the moment, this doesn’t mean that there are not other forms of distracted driving. Some of been around for years. Dinning and driving also can cause distracted driving. While it doesn’t take much to munch on a burger while you’re cruising along, what happens if your food or drink sills all over you and your car? Trying to work on damage control and clean up, it takes the center of attention away from driving. Music is also another form of distraction.  While most people don’t even need to look at the radio to change the station or volume any more, technology has increased so there are different ways everyone is able to listen to music while driving. You have to take your eyes off the road to change a CD, or look down at your iPod or other MP3 player to select a song or playlist. Looking at a map or GPS device while driving can also take focus away from operating a vehicle. Whether it’s an actual map, GPS device, or either one a cell phone, it does not take much to be distracted while driving. These are just a few of the many possible examples of distracted driving.

Ways to Prevent Distractions

To help prevent distractions while driving, there are a few things you can keep in mind. Actively observe yourself while driving. What are you doing? If your hands are busy, that means your mind is not free to fully pay attention while you drive. Study the route you are going to take before you leave. If you know where you are going before hand, there will not be the need for a GPS device. Be alert! Be aware of other drivers, as well as road and weather conditions. If you have to take your eyes of the road for anything, then pull over.
