There are a couple of important rules when it comes to defensive driving on the freeway. There are many key factors that attributed to these rules, and some of the biggest components include high speeds and traffic density. Knowing these simple yet important rules will help you drive safely, and help to transform you into a safe defensive driver.
No Stopping!
Do not stop on the freeway! You do not want to stop on the roadway, the shoulder, the median, and certainly not on the off and on-ramps. If you have to stop somewhere, get off the freeway, and find a safe spot on the access road. The shoulder of a highway is a dangerous place to stop, but if it is an emergency then stopping on the shoulder is permitted. Leaving a vehicle unattended will result in it being towed by the authorities quickly. So if you are coming up to a vehicle that stopped on the highway or shoulder, it is best for you to change lanes to create some distance. This will help insure the person’s safety who is trying to get their vehicle up and running again, and for you and any passengers as well.
No Backing Up!
It is illegal to back up on a freeway, and you cannot cross the median. If you miss the ramp you are suppose to exit, you have to wait for the next exit so you can turn around. Also, if you are about to miss an exit do not merge into the exit lane at the last minute, this can be extremely risky, and not to mention it increases your odds of being in an auto accident. The flow of traffic being disrupted for just a moment can cause severe congestion on the freeway.
Defensive Driving on a Freeway
On ramps will give you space to increase your speed when entering a highway. If traffic is flowing, it is important to increase your speed, so you can gradually make your way and merge with oncoming traffic. As you make your way to the the end of the ramp, and before you enter traffic, try not to decelerate to much, you should be able to match your speed with oncoming traffic, that way it makes merging safer and easier. When merging onto a freeway, you have to yield to the traffic that is already on it, but they also should make room for those entering the freeway. Be aware of what is going around around you. Make a visual head check before changing lanes or merging, so you can match your speed with traffic, and find an opening to safely merge with the traffic.
Drive a Safe Speed!
Excessive speeding or going 10 mph under the speed limit increase the possibility of a traffic crash. Please maintain a safe speed while on the freeway so that problems are not caused and everyone can get to where they are going safely. These are simple rules for defensive driving, but applying them will make driving on the freeway easy and problem free.
